review: The Season by Sarah MacLean

Release Date: March 2009

Publisher: Orchard Books / Hardcover

ISBN: 978-0545048866

Lady Alexandra Stafford is 17, and preparing for her first season and (hopefully) a flurry of eligble and wealthy suitors. Alex believes all the energy and time is better spent elsewhere, as she enjoys discussing politics and prefers the stables to perhaps more ladylike activities. Her dearest friends are Ella and Vivi, all three girls from families of the London aristocracy and born within weeks of each other.

Alex and Gavin Sewell have also been friends since childhood, when he rescued a seven-year old Alex caught up in a tree. With bordering estates and fathers close boyhood friends, the two cross paths often in both informal and social situations.

At 23 years of age, Gavin is the new Earl of Blackmoor. Dealing with the recent death of his father and the mystery and danger that surrounds it, Gavin is sombre and feeling the weight of his new responsibilities. When a threat to the young Earl intensifies, the three young ladies' resourcefulness and loyalty are deeply tested.

The Season is a wonderful Regency story about deep friendship, and the lovely wonders of "first-love" romance with its life-changing sweet and tender kisses. I hope there are happily-ever-after stories forthcoming for Alex's friends Vivi and Ella. Author Sarah MacLean has an adult regency titled Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake scheduled for release in January 2010 with Avon/HarperCollins.
